Base Station Question

Is anyone familiar with how the base station maintenance works.  I am writing a report and because the industry is so fragmented I am having trouble understanding the value chain.  Does the carrier outsource the work that is not "mission critical?"  I would appreciate the opportunity to learn whatever anyone can share.

Base Stations

Hello, I am wondering if anyone can help me understand more about base stations.  Specifically how the maintenance and up keep works.  Does the carrier take care of it or do they contract it out?  The reason I ask is that I work in private equity and venture capital and we are looking at an investment here.  For a finance geek like me it is pretty hard to grasp all the acronyms and intricacies of the industry.  Thanks for any help you can provide!

Thanks, that is definitely helpful.  Do you happen to know how the carriers, I'll use Verizon for example, take care of the HVAC, back up power and landscaping maintenance?  Our belief is that they have in house technicians maintain the important components, such as the RF equipment, but that they likely outsource the less critical service work.  We are trying to figure out if who is responsible for calling the HVAC guy and having him come out and fix things.  Is it Verizon or do they hire someone else to manage the outsourcing?

Hi lbruno,

I'm not particularly familliar with Base Station, but more with switching. I think that the principle should be the same :
The carrier operator have access to a range of alarm that are generated from the equipment.
Depending of the level of this alarm, and the contract that the carrier operator have with outsourcing company, he can raise intervention from outsourcing company or solve it by it own.
Some basic operation as periodic system backup can be part of the outsourcing contrat, low level alarm can also be part of the contrat, ...
