Hi All,
Whats the difference between CDMA2000 and UMTS in 3G Networks? or both are similar?
Sorry if it is very basic question..I am a bit new to telecom. Am learning at the moment.

UMTS is based on W-CDMA and is mostly preferred as the technology to enable 3G, by GSM using
countries, and it is managed by 3GPP(http://www.3GPP.org)
where as CDMA2000 is the preferred technology in non-GSM dominant coutries like Japan, Korea,
North/South America etc.
CDMA2000 is managed by 3GPP2.org (http://www.3GPP2.org)
There are even other technologies for 3G like
TD-SCDMA (China, http://www.tdscdma-forum.org/EN/index.asp) ,
and UMTS-TDD (http://www.umtstdd.org/).
Cheers.,
Sanketh.
Mostly WCDMA will be major player for UMTS Networks.

Yes Sunil,
Definitely the buzz is that WCDMA will be used widely.
Do you have more info related to this trend in the current scenerio..
Thanks.
Hi Sunil,
Why exactly WCDMA will dominate other technologies..
Could you pls explain a bit more about it..
Thanks
ok, from what i understand, UMTS uses the same backbone as GSM/GPRS. Only the radio access network changes, ie BTS and BSC. UMTS is a wideband technology, it requires 5 MHz to operate, it is based on CDMA access. CDMA2000 evolves directly from CDMAOne. You can find CDMA2000 in a variety of versions, being 1xRTT and 1xEVDO the most popular.
UMTS is basically heading towards all IP network. With improved SS7 protcol stack /Sigtran implementation and enhanced signalling procedures ,UMTS will dominate the wireless domain for coming years. Its flexible and can support multiple radio access types.
UMTS is more specific in defining User plane and control plane ,of
radio and transport network of access network [with introduction of MPLS ATM/TDM Pseudo wires], core network and of access stratum and non-access stratum. The User Plane is again separated into two traffic-dependent domains circuit switched and the packet switched domain .
