UMTS: imply a case of 3G network, which uses WCDMA technology in radio access network and network structure shown in R99, R4, R5... (how many releases has been launched up to now? i'm not sure)
WCDMA: a radio access technology, may be used in other networks
Hi
sorry for the delayed response
UMTS is the high speed front end network to the existing voice and data n/w's.
where as WCDMA is the modulation scheme used within the UMTS radio access network.
TDMA is air interface of GSM, that is b/w the Mobile Station to BTS,CDMA is the Air interface of CDMA200,EVDO etc, while WCDMA is the Air interface of UMTS.
Note Um interface=Air interface=Radio access.

Ham Holma and Antti Toskala explain it in their book

Hi Thinkid,UMTS refer to 3G technologu where as WCDMA is a Access technique on Air part which is CDMA. Here 'W' in WCDMA refers to wide having meaning of Broadband.Hope it'll clear your doubt.
