A Next Generation Network (NGN) is a packet-based network able to provide services including Telecommunication Services and able to make use of multiple broadband, QoS-enabled transport technologies and in which service-related functions are independent from underlying transport-related technologies. It offers unrestricted access by users to different service providers. It supports generalized mobility which will allow consistent and ubiquitous provision of services to users.

The Next Generation Network ( NGN ) holds tremendous potential. Promising to merge the transmission of data, voice, video and other media onto a single network, this will be the standard network infrastructure for the next 10 to 20 years. As competition to deliver content over the Next Generation Network grows, so does the need for precise timing and synchronization, or sync. To be competitive in this next information market, service providers must focus on performance: quality of transmission will be a huge competitive differentiator. Precise time synchronization is an essential component for the reliable transport and switching necessary to deliver smooth transmission of voice, video and data, as well as new generation of services and applications that will emerge. As the industry leader in both Carrier Class and Enterprise Class IP timing and synchronization solutions, Symmetricom is uniquely positioned to meet these synchronization needs.

For voice applications one of the most important devices in NGN is a Softswitch - a programmable device that controls VoIP calls. It enables correct integration of different protocols within NGN. The most important function of the Softswitch is creating the interface to the existing telephone network, PSTN , through Signalling Gateways (SG) and Media Gateways (MG). However, the Softswitch as a term may be defined differently by the different equipment manufacturers and have somewhat different functions.
